Walking around Gunsan’s historic downtown is a bit like traveling back to the 1930s. Its stately old banks, grand wooden mansions, exotic villas and narrow alleyways lined by aging facades point to a time when Japanese settlers built lives of opulence based on ruthless exploitation—all made possible by the forced annexation of Korea in 1910. It’s a heritage that was once ignored and despised; these days, however, preservationists, local authorities and, last but not least, tourists are showing increasing appreciation for the historic value of the city’s colonial era monuments, some of which have now been turned into museums, galleries and coffee shops.
