Gwangju, a city of arts and culture
A KTX train ride from Yongsan Station in Seoul to Gwangju takes only about three hours. Geographically located in Jeollanam-do, Gwangju was designated as a metropolitan city in 1995, giving it equal status to a province. Although not as famous or as full of historical landmarks as other regions, Gwangju is a city where art has permeated the everyday lives of the residents. Gwangju also holds painful memories of Korea’s modern history as it played an important role in Korea's democracy and human rights movements. This particular political history, as well as the city’s arts culture can be found and felt in various attractions and events throughout the city such as the Gwangju Biennale, Design Biennale, Yangnim-dong Alley, Mudeungsan National Park and the Uijae Museum of Korean Art.
